Now I see why some of my less tech savvy, generation privacy friends were so hesitant to join Facebook. I signed up for an Instagram account and decided I'd start by just following one person...I know, wimpy? Boring? Well, anyway I already have followers. Did I unknowingly send out a mass email just because I "shared contacts" or do people on Instagram get an alert when one of their "friends" joins Instagram? I realize it's all about being connected, and that's what is fun and perhaps useful about all this, but it leaves you feeling a little out of control and maybe even exposed. I don't have anything to hide...really I don't! But all of this interconnectedness has me toggling between being excited by the amazing potential and and intimidated by the exposure.
I was at a conference when the speaker asked why a person wouldn't...I think it was blog in this case...and people responded with answers like it seems so self important, nothing to share, does everyone need to know this, or uncomfortable relinquishing privacy. The response was... Get over it! I'm not sure why I have such a problem with this...maybe the next Thing is to "seek help".
And it's not that I'm not interested. I check my social media several times a day and follow other blogs and podcasts.
All that being said, I can also see the potential for sharing about a school, library, or organization. In fact, I'm one of the people in charge of adding content to our school Facebook page and YouTube channel. I'm not sure if we need an Instagram account for people to find, but I see the potential of jazzing up some of the announcements or reporting events with some of the previous Things editing of photos. I've also toyed with creating a more tailored webpage for the library on our school site. Who knows, maybe we will have an Instagram account!?!
