23 Mobile Things-Thing 22 Discovering Apps

Discovering apps can be/is overwhelming.  There are so many apps, and they vary widely in quality.   It can be very time consuming, but you do learn things like avoiding "free" apps with "in app purchases" and finding trusted sources for Best Apps lists.  Discovering apps is actually part of my job this year, and though I have found some on my own, most apps have been recommended to me by another person, at a workshop, from peers, from a website like readwritething.org, or from a list I was directed to by reading an educational article.
I was introduced to appsgonefree and try to check it out.  I need to make that more of a habit.  I also need to make it a habit to delete apps that don't turn out to be useful...more clutter!
It was fun to look through the suggested lists of Searching Online.  There seem to be a lot of apps that do the same thing or combine app capabilities.  So you really have to either experiment to find the just right app or find one and stick with it...especially if it's an app that involves customization.  There are also a lot of apps that I don't have a use for which also complicates finding the "right" apps.  The abundance of apps is incredible and growing daily. I also noticed that on one list prices were in pounds. It highlights the international nature of technology, but I also found that one of the apps I tried is not available in this country...interesting.
I loaded Google Maps to my phone as I have heard it's better than the Apple maps.  I added Feedly to my iPad.  This is service...now with an app that I heard about at a conference, but hadn't tried yet.
And finally...Quixey...I found this to be quite nice.  What I liked most about it was I could type in familiar apps, and it listed apps that were similar.  For instance, I put in Educreations and got a list of other whiteboard apps, some of which may suit our school needs better depending on our goals.  I'm trying out Multiplication Genius based on the Quixey search.  I will certainly use Quixey again.
