Thing 29 Google Tools

I chose Google Alerts. This sounds like a useful tool, especially when tracking current or quickly changing topics. I wimped out to experiment with the names of my brother and I. I don't expect my inbox will be too clogged with information. I also chose Parkinson's Disease as a family interest issue.
I also noted the questions in the Web History link. I think the concerns about privacy are very much generational if what I have experienced on Facebook is any indication.
The Google Calendar feature looks like it could be a great tool for a common, accessible resource to keep track of district building use. I played around with what that might look like. Our small district libraries haven't had scheduling conflicts, so until our current sign up doesn't work, we will continue with paper and pencil. From experience, I know that some of our teachers would be uncomfortable with the online calendar... there just isn't the time (and sometimes interest in) the staff development that would be needed to help people to be comfortable. To put this in perspective... there is still a teacher holdout even with email. In the future, when we have a full staff who is comfortable with technology, this may be a viable option for library sign up.
I will have to think about the value of posting my schedule on a calendar, since I work in three libraries.
