Wow. Would it surprise you if I said I began this Thing being rather skeptical. Second life? I'm busy enough with my first life, and so are my friends and most other people I know. I'm afraid that I and others have too much "screen time" as it is. Well, the Ohio University video was very interesting. I could see how this "game format" and the comfort level of those already gaming could be appealing to a student. I just spent three years in an online masters program that was nothing like my undergraduate experience. Although I wouldn't give up my "actual" college experience and don't think it could be replicated on a computer, I can see that Second Life could have added some life to my online learning experience.
It has also been very difficult to get high school students to utilize online databases and project calculators, but if they were able to "discover" these opportunities in Second Life they may actually make use of them. They could be all organized as a one stop shopping experience in a modern, familiar way. I wonder how many rural HS students are participating in this kind of gaming. I mostly hear about IM, texting, and social networks like myspace and bebo.
